A new report claims that four Anne Arundel County businesses have Maryland’s best performing stock over the past five years, including one Annapolis finance house focused on renewable energy projects.
Hannon Armstrong Sustainable Infrastructure Capital, an Annapolis-based debt and equity financing company that focuses on efficient and renewable energy, was rated the sixth best stock in Maryland, according to a study conducted by SmartAsset.
The New York-based personal finance technology company’s “Best Performing Stocks” looked at a number of metrics to measure the best stocks in the state over a five-year period starting in January 2011 and ending in March 2016. The results were primarily based around which companies’ stock prices had grown the fastest while posing the least risk to investors.
“To do that we looked at the companies that are publicly traded on major U.S. exchancges (New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq and AMEX) and have a market value greater than $50 million at the end of the first quarter of 2016,” the report reads.
After separating companies into three categories based on their market value, SmartAsset then examined “the stock price, dividends and volatility of each company over a time period of a little more than (five) years (from December (31), 2010 to March (31), 2016.”
While it may not have landed the study’s top spot, Hannon Armstrong has made a name for itself since it began trading on the NYSE in 2013.
Led by president and CEO Jeffrey Eckel, it’s made approximately $1.35 billion worth of investments in over 105 efficiency, wind and solar projects.
Lockheed Martin, the Bethesda-based defense, aerospace and technology company with over 120,000 employees, topped the list with strong numbers on the average annual return on investments with a proportionally low volatility rating.
Two other Anne Arundel businesses based out of Bethesda also came in the top 10.
American Capital Agency Corporation, a Bethesda-based private equity firm and global asset manager, came in at number five.
And Eagle Bancorp, the bank holding company for EagleBank, came in at number seven.
