Stocks piled on the negative side Friday afternoon, but lower volume lessened the sting.

The Nasdaq sank 0.5%, while the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones industrial average lost 0.9% and 1% respectively. Volume was running below average on both major exchanges.

Blue chips were mostly down. Wal-Mart Stores (WMT) suffered the hardest hit on the Dow. The stock slid 3% in fast trade, halting near its 200-day moving average line.

Action was quiet among top-rated stocks. Nvidia (NVDA) was one of the few big movers. The stock gapped up 14% in huge volume. The company reported strong results Thursday.

Among IBD’s 197 industry groups, medical stocks posted gains while railroad and trucking stocks dived.
