Mining stocks rise but FTSE starts lower

(Open): The FTSE 100 starts the week with modest falls despite gains for leading mining companies.

Anglo American was up 3% to lead the list of risers. Antofagasta, Fresnillo and Rangold followed with smaller gains. Giant South African miner Lonmin rose 4% after it reported a return to profit thanks to cost savings.

Insurance giant Prudential was the main loser, with a fall of 2%.

The FTSE 100 was down 36.92 at 6,101.58 points.

The pound was flat against the dollar at $1.4367 but was down 0.01% against the euro at €1.269.
